Aequorea

South Africa has a coastline of approximately 4000 kilometres and an Exclusive Economic Zone of 1.5 million square kilometres under its jurisdiction. This large ocean space is rich in biodiversity, providing living and non-living resources that either are contributing or could potentially contribute to the country’s economy and to job creation. A key driver to unlock the full potential of the ocean as elucidated in Operation Phakisa is ocean observation capability, which is currently lacking.

Aequorea is positioned to play in this space, providing localised technology solutions developed by the Cape Peninsula University of Technology.

Our primary offering of is the modular Coastal Observer smart buoy system. The Coastal Observer has been purpose-designed for commercial and scientific applications and has been tested to withstand South African ocean conditions. The Coastal Observer enables users to get data in real-time through wireless telemetry from a range of sensors mounted to, and powered by, the platform. An added advantage is that payloads can be customised dependant on individual customer needs.

The Coastal Observer smart buoy system has been developed to service the following markets

Marine Transport and Manufacturing

Offshore Oil and Gas Exploration

Aquaculture, Forestry and Fisheries

Marine Protection Services and Ocean Governance

Small Harbour Development

Coastal and Marine Tourism and Marine Consulting
